I can get you a taco stand by 3 o'clock this afternoon....
...Was my response to a friend who mentioned she didn't know of any taco stands in the area. What I really wanted to say: Do you live under a frikin' rock? But a rare moment of common sense and self control kicked in; the famous toe quote from the Big Lebowski, spewed out.
A guide to a few of our favorite taco stands between Puerto Vallarta and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle....
[Puerto Vallarta]
Located kitty corner from the Pemex in el centro; north of the malecón.
Anything smoked marlin is double d-licious...hamburger, taco, burrito, tostada.
Buyer be-ware, more addictive than crack.
[Bucerias & La Cruz de Huanacaxtle]
Across from the Telmex in Bucerias & next to the Oxxo in La Cruz.
Bite size spicy pineapple pastor tacos. Flavorful salsas and guacamoles, too.
This is a popular late night snack for locals.
[Bucerias]
Located at the center of town by the main plaza. There is no sign; look for tables directly in front of the church doors. Fish, shrimp, marlin & adobada tacos. This has been our Saturday afternoon lunch ritual since first arriving to the area. Some of our favorite Spanish slang words have been acquired here.
[La Cruz de Huanacaxtle]
Arriving from the only stoplight in town, drive towards the cross at the town's center and loop around the 'glorieta' to the left. Right onto the first street....towards the Red Chairs set up on the street.
Adobada, asada, chorizo and bean tacos served alongside some fiery hot salsas.
This is a bi-weekly apres-surf stop for us; a stones throw away from our casa.
Ceviche Stand
[La Cruz de Huanacaxtle]
On the main highway towards Punta de Mita, Mario sells his wife's homemade ceviche; always with a huge friendly smile! Located on the right hand side in front of a small tienda just before you reach the only stop light in town.
El Carboncito
[Puerto Vallarta]
Between the Pemex and beach in 'el centro'; north of the malecón. Tacos de pastor; cheap & 'riquisimo'.
El Tacatzo
[Bucerias]
Located just past the Mega grocery store. Tacos de everything; veggie options, too. Try the tacos or quesadillas de Jamaica, made from a local flower.
Chedraui Area Taco Stands
[Valle Dorado]
Going the opposite direction of Nuevo Vallarta is Valle Dorado. One of my favorite tacos is served on a small patio located on the corner just past the main intersection. Your burrito or taco comes with a side of french fries and more homemade salsas than you can imagine; mango, chocolate, chipotle....
