Within my circle of friends, I have a reputation for writing letters to inform companies of my disgust & disapproval....a Super Bowl commerical & Micheal Franti's Stay Human Apparel immediately come to mind.
However, I have a strict rule.
For every [polite & constructive] complaint a positive letter must follow.
Here it is.
The positive.
A rare moment
[many of my friends won't believe].
Giving the place I love to hate, a little bit of love.
Sayu [oh, it is so hard to say],
Sayulita.

Sam and I met thirteen years ago while working as environmental education teachers in New Hampshire. We traveled from seasonal job to seasonal job as naturalist for three years [as every recent graduate avoiding the 'real world' should]. After working outdoors for two east coast winters, we migrated west to the isolated Hawaiian islands; tucked away deep in the Pacific. A year later we lived out of a Nissan Ultima; surfboards on top while traveling the Golden State of California for work, each week a new destination to set up camp. We were professional outdoor educators, guides and naturalist roaming the Earth for surf, hikes, frisbee golf courses and Trader Joes; while juggling that pesky little thing called, a job.
Signing up for a guided tour on vacation has the potential to be absolutely horrible.
Our friends who were visiting were interested in a tour, based out of Sayulita....
MexiTreks guide & owner, Steve had me within five minutes of meeting by asking 'are there any injuries or allergies I should be aware of before we begin'. He is the real deal, I immediately thought to myself; nostalgic for the good ole' days, as a guide.
I observed him from a naturalist perspective, admiring how he presented us with a sense of place as we embarked upon our journey and he outlined our upcoming adventure. Steve is a true expert with a vast knowledge of the surrounding flora and fauna. More importantly he cares for his community and respects the culture and beliefs of the locals.

Our hike began in San Ignacio; just south of Sayulita along the main highway. We walked the historic pathways which once connected the small pueblos of the area; traversing the lush canopy to San Pancho.
Thank you Shelly and Kevin for visiting, finding this gem of a hike & spoiling us!
Too bad Sammy was hunkered down over the toilet all day and missed out
on this adventure.
