An Ode, To the Man Who [Has the Privilege to] Put Up With Me

Six years ago, we threw one of the best parties ever in the tiny mountain town of Greer.  It was our good fortune to be surrounded by our families and friends.  And, after three days of celebration we officially became known as 'Team Fuber'!

About a month ago, Sammy made a comment that he would love to hear a story of 'us' from my perspective...well, that is some frickin' pressure and impeccable timing since our anniversary was on the horizon; how he knew, I don't know, because I hadn't reminded him yet.  I researched and thought, and procrastinated and thought some more, what could I do to show my love?...build a monument to express my love; no, already done.  Write a love song; no, I will leave that to all the boy bands.  Run through town naked yelling 'I love Sam Uber'; no, not yet...saving that for our ten year wedding anniversary!

So, here it is.

My ode to the love of my life; The man I love more than Snoop Dog loves the chronic, more than Republicans love to hate Obama, and more than vegetarians love the smell of bacon in the morning...

An ode, to the man who has put up with me,
For the past ten years day in and day out;
And a quick, little story of how we came to be
It was love at first site although Sammy may have had a little doubt;
'You are vegan and so tall...I am not sure if this will work out',
But I am sure it was my disc golf skills and my fancy trailer in the woods that awed he;
Unfortunately,  I moved away up the curvy road into town
And got even farther when I moved 5500 miles away to a little island in the sea,
I came back unannounced to the little town of Freedom,
It was you that I was first to see, neither of us aware of what would come,
We set off in a car across the country, when you broke the news that you were not going to be around.

You wanted me to come, to Hawaii but I refused and declared,
'I will not compromise myself for a man';
But, you persuaded me and three months later a little bungalow on the north shore, we shared
We traded in the Hawaiian waves for the warm California sand;
Vagabonds living in a car together working up and down the coast
It was along the river behind the Taj Majal that you proclaimed your love for me;
But I already knew with all my heart during our short stint apart, that I would be your partner for a long life ahead
I wasn't so tall anymore, was I, you began to see,
And now-a-days there are times that you too pass on the carnes and quesos,
For this, you deserve (just like Sage) one million besos,
I thank you for committing to the untraditional life with me instead.

I applaud you for putting up with my Jen Farrell attitude,
You've demanded communication and trust;
For this and so much more, I have the ultimate gratitude
From India to Nicaragua we travel the dusty roads on many a crowded bus;
Skiing in Argentina, paragliding in Ecuador, and the Dukes of Hazards white knuckle rides in Venezuela,
I look forward to collecting more stories and memories with you;
Pura vida, Aloha, Hello my friend
A beautiful mountain wedding with two natty-headed hippies and no shoes,
Volunteering; what a honeymoon planting trees in scorching hot weather up on the hill,
Wrangling such a strong-willed woman takes some skills,
It is the 'pants' of this relationship to you, I commend.
