Tequila is located in the state of Jalisco; near Guadalajara. It is a UNESCO world heritage site; recognized for its outstanding cultural and natural importance. It is also identified as a 'Pueblo Magico' by the Mexican government. The government currently recognizes 83 towns, within Mexico, as Magical Towns for their importance in symbolism, legends, history, important events and day-to-day life.
The rolling blue hills of agave, cobblestone streets, and friendly people are an added bonus to the rich cultural history of this pueblo. Each evening around 9:00 the priest comes out of the main church, in the central plaza, to offer a blessing; by ringing the bell. Everything in town stops at this time.
It is not easy to pull me away from the sand and the salty ocean; however, I will gladly put on some boots, a jacket and scarf to visit the amazing village of Tequila! I was pleasantly surprised to be the only North American tourists staying in town during New Year's Eve. It was a rare several days of feeling as if we lived in Mexico.
