Yesterday, I was invited by a student's mother to walk with her on her yearly pilgrimage.
And, I accepted.
La Ruta del Peregrino (Pilgrim's Route) is a spiritual walk done by thousands of Mexicans each year to Talpa de Allende, in the state of Jalisco. Pilgrims travel by foot, horseback, car, bus, moto, and bike to the Virgin 'Rosario del Talpa'. The town is recognized as a healing center for various religions throughout history. Pilgrims make the journey as a way of showing gratitude to the virgin for the miracles she has endowed upon them.
Today, a co-worker asked what miracle had inspired me to walk.
Everything is a miracle, I replied! I have so much to be thankful for; I am indebted to walk.
Although I am not Catholic, like most of her followers, I look forward to the opportunity to turn my attention inward for an extended period of time; to the challenges of hiking in the scorching hot, humid weather; along the jungle paths and the cement highways. Also, to confronting any fears that arise along the way.
I imagine that I will spend the long 12 hour days of hiking, considering the many miracles in my life. Possibly accompanied by a few curse words and moments of doubt.
Below is our route and more details of our trip...
Day One: 12 hours of walking. Rest during the high sun hours in a hot spring. Arrive at night to Zapotan. Sleep on the patio of Doña Pachita in our tents.
Day Two: 12 hours of walking. Rest during the high sun hours on the top of mountain. Arrive at night to Cabos. Sleep outside the local church. No bathroom. Opportunity to rent a bathroom from a local home.
Day Three: 5 hours of walking. Arrive to Talpa by lunch time. Return to Vallarta by bus or hitchhike.
