My Mexican Life [In Photos] Sunday Birria

Each Sunday we ride our bikes, a few blocks, along the bumpy cobblestone streets to eat 'Birria'.  Some weeks, we rush from the surf, throwing our shirts on and wiping the sand from our body; begging the women behind the grill to cook just one more meal, before they close.   A parked pick-up truck and clean laundry drying on a line, typically, dwell inside the family patio Monday through Saturday.  Come Sunday, beautiful table clothes are placed on the half dozen plastic tables, along with handmade ceramic salsa platters.

Birria is a spicy goat stew which is eaten with fresh tortillas and cheese.  I opt for the bean tacos; wondering how much lard it takes to make them so scrumptious (and how fast my arteries will close from mass consumption).  The women in the family work inside the kitchen and the young boys take orders and deliver the food.  Every now and then, Regina; the five year old granddaughter will put her hairnet and apron on and practice taking orders with her cousins.

The food is fantastic, but it is the feeling of sitting inside the families home that keeps me coming back each Sunday.
